TRS ERH in soil remediation.  This animation illustrates In Situ Thermal Remediation of chlorinated volatile organic compounds and soil and dolomite bedrock using TRS Electrical Resistance Heating.

Four contaminant source areas partially below buildings were remediated in 2009.  The results of one of the source areas are in this animation.  The red mass represents the contaminant, the vertical black rods are the ERH electrodes that were co-located with recovery wells.  The electrodes deliver energy into the sub-surface and convey steam and vapours to the surface for treatment.

The electrodes do not get any hotter than the surrounding soil.  The days of operations in contaminant mass removed are in the upper left and right corners of the animation screen.  Sub-surface temperature increases slightly faster in the areas of highest contaminant concentrations.  This is advantageous because these areas clean up quicker and can be turned off early following sample confirmation.  The remaining energy is redirected into the areas until they are cleaned up also.  This eliminates wasted energy and saves time and money.

Average sub-surface temperatures increased at a rate of 1 1/2  degrees Celsius per day during heat-up and the maximum sub-surface temperature reached was a 114 degrees Celsius.  At the end of ERH, final contaminant concentrations were orders or magnitude lower than the guaranteed remedial goal.  Confirmatory soil sampling included independent analysis of 204 soil samples collected from 71 sample locations.  Over the 6 month ERH operating period, 600lbs of contaminant mass were recovered.  The contaminant mass was reduced by 98.4%.

Genesis Cyclone for Trenching, Resurfacing, Soil Remediation and Quarry Work.  The Genesis Cyclone is a very different attachment.  It’s a rock and concrete grinding tool.

It’s used in many applications from soil remediation to utility line placement, building demolition, quarrying, soil remediation, it’s been around the world, been used in many different applications.  “It literally spins at the end of the excavator’s stick tip, hydraulically, and is equipped with a series of teeth common in the rock industry that scales it’s way through rock and concrete.”

This tool has got carbide tip teeth that are replaceable.  They’re mounted in holders on  a drum that protects the internal gear box and hydraulic motor.  It’s a very strong, sturdy-built  machine that will stand-out to the breakout force of the excavators that it’s mounted to.

“Every one of these carbide processing teeth are replaceable and they’re patterned to minimize wear on the spinning drum.  This thing will actually tramp solid rock, things like sandstone, some forms of limestone or any material with a compressive strength of less than 10,000PSI.  The cyclone is particularly great with concrete.”

“It’s used a great deal in concrete veneer work, where a specific number of inches of concrete needs to be removed from the phasing of the concrete.  You can set the depth of it’s milling to match up with the specs of the job.  And, you can create a great surface on that concrete when the older concrete has been removed and you’re down into the parent concrete which is in much better shape.  The cyclone creates a very good surface for the new concrete to adhere to.”

Regardless of which application, whether it’s concrete or rock, the material that the tool removes, is almost without exception, perfect backfill.  It’s a 2inch, 3inch minus material and sometimes even under 1inch in size.  So, it can be used right on site for backfill.  Doesn’t need to be crushed , doesn’t need to be hauled away and fill doesn’t need to b purchased to be put back in the haul.

“Cyclone is currently available in four models.  Two with rotation, two without.  It requires at least a 70,000lb excavator to create the horsepower to keep the mills spinning.  And we make a larger model for the bigger machines.”

With these rotating models, there’s a bearing with locks at 90degrees, unlock the lock pins, manually turn it 90degrees and lock it down again.  Simple as that.   Genesis Cyclone is perfect for quarrying, resurfacing and soil remediation.

Site Remediation of Contaminated Soil.  Hi, James from Australian Enviroservices again.   We’re on site at Bankstown doing a little bit of excavation and soil remediation.

The preliminary investigation identified contaminated soil.  It was naturally and vertically delineated.  We’ve come on site with a 20 ton excavator, we’ve removed the soil , collected validation samples for the excavation and we’re now in the process of reinstating and compacting.

On this particular job, we’re reinstating with DGB20 and because of the depth of the excavation, we’re using a remote control head, foot vibrating roller.  The reason why we use this is so that we don’t have to send anyone down to the excavation because at the end of the day, we want to make sure that everyone goes home in the same shape that we’ve come to work.  So, thanks for watching our soil remediation video.
