Simple Soil Remediation Techniques for Your Needs

Simple Soil Remediation Techniques for Your Needs

soil remediation in new jerseyMore often than not, modern houses are built on tainted land—soil that were used for factories or chemical warehouses before. If your house is built on such land, you will have a hard time growing your plants around your house.  It cannot create even a small beautiful garden.  This article will guide you to do some soil remediation techniques to somehow reduce the toxicity levels of your land.

Compost Cramming Technique

Compost is one great addition to kill the toxic chemicals on your land. This means that compost like cow manure, or fertilizers would be enough to revitalize your soil—either you mix it with your soil or add it as a layer on top. Compost is not only healthy for your soil; it also supplements the growth of your plants on that land.  If you want to make it healthier, choose organic compost like leftovers from meals, manure and grass clippings.

Circulating Your Crops

Various plants need and release different nutrients. When you have the same kind of plant over and over, you are actually draining the land of particular nutrients while offering the same kind of nutrients. In other words, you reciprocate one kind of nutrient for another. You will notice that this kind of technique is widely used by farmers all over the world especially those who are dedicated in planting seasonal crops. It is likewise important to create a garden plan so that you know which nutrients are scarce and abundant. This is one way of boosting soil remediation in new jersey.

Charging Calcium

Calcium sulfate hydride, otherwise known as plaster of Paris and commercial fertilizers are likewise helpful in the soil remediation process. Both boost the calcium content of the soil. In addition, they free space from compact soil and ensure that the soil is spongier.  Like any other supplement, when you pour too much of these on the land, you are exposed to the risk of creating acidic soil. This may not harm some plants but to others, it might be a nuisance.

In case you think that these soil remediation techniques are not enough to transform your soil to its once healthy state, you can always go for intensive remediation processes such as water dredging, soil replacement and the use of other heavy machinery to get the job done. The soil remediation techniques mentioned above are ideal for homes which are not more than 300 square meters because such land can be handle by a hand or two.

Demystifying Different Types of Bio-Remediation

Demystifying Different Types of Bioremediation

soil remediator equipment in new jerseyAny process that employs numerous microorganisms in the soil, for the purposes of cleaning up pollutants from contaminated environment, can aptly be regarded as bioremediation – a scientific process that is similar to soil remediation. Microorganisms released from bioremediation receive toxins that keep them alive, while in turn keeping the environment safe and free from toxins.

Here is how bioremediation (soil remediation) process works

Myriads of contaminated areas contain chemicals such as hydrocarbons and heavy metals. For proper treatment of the soil to occur, for bioremediation process to take effect, the metabolism of microorganisms must combine with the functions of the chemicals present. Both sides gain; the environment gets cleared off toxins, while the microorganisms get food that is toxins.

There are different types of bioremediation processes that effectively keep the environment clean and free from contamination. Initially, there is the intrinsic bioremediation process. It is most effective in areas that are filled with toxins such as hydrocarbons found in petroleum products. Microorganisms break apart the toxins and digest them to keep the environment clean.

Subsequently, there is the bio-stimulation process. Unlike the aforementioned, this soil remediation process has to be instigated and it is only viable in areas where microorganisms naturally exist. Here is how it works; for contaminants to fully disappear in an area, scientists must enhance the growth and activity of bacteria that live within the contaminated area.

That is inclusive of all microorganisms that breed therein as well. Since the idea is to flourish the microorganisms and allow them to thrive – for the natural removal of toxins from the soil and water – it is imperative that nutrients and oxygen be added to the polluted areas to effectively enhance the remediation process. This is done until all the contaminants fully disappear.

There is also the bio-augmentation process that is commonly used in waste-water treatment facilities. Chances of this soil remediation process yielding success are almost zero, because introducing microorganisms to a foreign environment kills them, hence proving ineffective. Microorganisms are purposely meant for the growth of a specific contaminant.

For the bio-augmentation remediation process to yield much success, microorganisms must be aptly introduced to toxins that were removed from the original contamination site. But that rarely happens since not many a scientists are well versed with bioremediation process of this kind. That explains why this soil remediation process is still used in waste-water facilities.

Methods of Soil Remediation For A Greener Planet

Some Methods of Soil Remediation

soil remediator equipment in new jerseySoil pollution is a great problem that is deteriorating our environment every day. The pollution mainly occurs due to disused gas fields, waste dumpsites, chemical laden industrial lands, etc. Soil remediation is that process that restores damaged soil medium to its normal condition. Geologists employ a variety of methods for removing soil contamination. These methods range from slow to fast and passive to active systems. Depending on a few factors like the geology of the area, type and gravity of the pollution, and the budget and timeframe of the project, each soil remediation method has its own pros and cons.

  • Dual phase extraction and air sparging method is good for removing volatile and semi-volatile constituents. A high-powered vacuum pump is used in dual phase extraction to extract soil vapors. On the other hand, air sparging is used to remove volatile elements from the upper soil.
  • Another soil remediation method is to use injectables. This method is suitable for a variety of elements and can be used in busy areas where heavy equipments cannot be installed for an extended period. These cleaning agents are injected into the subsurface for stimulating contaminant degradation.
  • Simple soil removal is good for those properties that have localized pollution. In this process, the soil remediation can be done by excavating the contaminated soil and disposing off at a landfill or soil treatment facility.
  • Phytoremediation is an eco-friendly soil remediation system that is gaining popularity constantly. In this process, shrubs and trees are used to decrease the density of pollutants in the subsurface. Through this process, any specific area is remediated by using plants to uptake soil through their root system. Specific plants are effective for specific pollutants. So, right type of plant species is needed to be used for proper soil remediation.
  • Another eco-friendly treatment process is natural attenuation. In this method, microorganisms are used for soil remediation. This system works well for organic elements like gasoline. Natural attenuation is the system of using microorganisms that feed on organic matter in order to treat the elements that naturally degrade in the subsurface.

In order to complete the cleanup process, this method is often used in combination of active soil remediation systems. The proper remediation of soil is largely dependent on the constant monitoring of the system.

The effectiveness of soil remediation techniques depends on the location, contaminants, desired goal, and the available resources. So, in order to determine the proper technique, each unique circumstance should be evaluated properly.

TRS ERH in soil remediation.  This animation illustrates In Situ Thermal Remediation of chlorinated volatile organic compounds and soil and dolomite bedrock using TRS Electrical Resistance Heating.

Four contaminant source areas partially below buildings were remediated in 2009.  The results of one of the source areas are in this animation.  The red mass represents the contaminant, the vertical black rods are the ERH electrodes that were co-located with recovery wells.  The electrodes deliver energy into the sub-surface and convey steam and vapours to the surface for treatment.

The electrodes do not get any hotter than the surrounding soil.  The days of operations in contaminant mass removed are in the upper left and right corners of the animation screen.  Sub-surface temperature increases slightly faster in the areas of highest contaminant concentrations.  This is advantageous because these areas clean up quicker and can be turned off early following sample confirmation.  The remaining energy is redirected into the areas until they are cleaned up also.  This eliminates wasted energy and saves time and money.

Average sub-surface temperatures increased at a rate of 1 1/2  degrees Celsius per day during heat-up and the maximum sub-surface temperature reached was a 114 degrees Celsius.  At the end of ERH, final contaminant concentrations were orders or magnitude lower than the guaranteed remedial goal.  Confirmatory soil sampling included independent analysis of 204 soil samples collected from 71 sample locations.  Over the 6 month ERH operating period, 600lbs of contaminant mass were recovered.  The contaminant mass was reduced by 98.4%.

Soil Remediation and Its Sustainable Development

Soil Remediation and Its sustainable development

Because of higher intellect, humankind has been able to change the natural environment to suit its own needs and comforts.

Soil Remediation is when many facilities are extracting contaminated harmful substance like pesticides, waste material of different companies, paints and some harmful substance in another facility.

People have in fact, built cities and towns and constructed concrete buildings, bridges, roads and other infrastructures. They have constructed vehicles to traverse the surface of the earth faster. A change in our environment is done by to raise people’s incomes and improve the quality of human life. As it turned out, some designed and implemented changes did not achieve the objective of improving the quality of life.

Some of them have actually caused imbalance in nature. Development that results in imbalances in nature is not sustainable in the long term. Eventually nature itself is consumed, depleted and degraded. Nature goes out of balance when some part of the environment is destroyed or polluted, or when a resource is depleted. We shall consider some of these imbalances of nature in the succeeding sections.

It is not man alone but also the natural forces and processes that have destroyed natural environments. Such destructive natural forces and processes are simply referred to as natural hazards. There is almost nothing that people can do to stop when they occur except get out of the way as fast as they can. The most insidious degradation, pollution and resource depletion have been caused by people. All these have been done in the name of development.

Sometimes people forgot to think that we must take good care of our natural resources. Forests also preserve topsoil in the uplands and thus prevent siltation and sedimentation in water reservoirs and irrigation channels in the lowlands. The rest is neither compostable nor combustible. The city’s present method of solid waste disposal is apparently unable to cope with the problem.

This is evident in the mounting piles of garbage in many street corners. Smokey Mountain has been sealed off to further dumping. Not only are the piles of garbage on city streets unsightly, they also serve as breeding places for disease-causing microorganisms.

Soil Remediation: Rapid Population Growth and its Effect on Health

Soil Remediation: Rapid Population Growth and its Effect on Health

soil remediation techniques

Our environmental problems should not stop us from striving for development, progress and modernity. Soil remediation is a good start because the company finds ways how to make use of the contaminated waste materials, so that it will not harm any living and non-living things.

The way to the developed state is through conservation and sustainable productivity.

In this fact, conservation is wise use of resource or of the environment. Harvesting or extracting just enough to enable the source to produce again and again is sustainable productivity. These are the keys to the sustainable development of the environment. Soil remediation is which we had to deplore and condemn the destruction of the environment and depletion of natural resources. As evidence, sustainable productivity of soil remediation is best observed in renewable resources.

However, there are resources which are non-renewable. It is easy to deplore and condemn the destruction of the environment and depletion of natural resources. But it is dissuade people from furthering such activities. Soil remediation is when the contaminated soil is being replaced in the machine by something useful in the environment. It is more even difficult if these people are forced to engage in these activities for their own survival. Any effort toward sustainable development must provide for the survival needs of people.

Over decades of their kinds of activities, their lot has not improved. The quality of their life has instead become degraded. Sustainable development means not only economic improvement as revealed by reports of government economists. Soil remediation also means utilization of resources those results in increasing the “well-being” or improvement of the quality of life of all persons in the nation particularly the less financially able. Cooperatives, profit-sharing, and social forestry are initiatives in this direction.

Hopefully people will be able to realize that we must take good care of our environment. Life sustaining system consists of all resources, forces and processes in the environment that makes life possible. Balance of nature is evident when populations in an ecosystem are stable. That is why stability of soil remediation is being utilized all over the world.

Soil Remediation: Using A Genesis Cyclone

Soil Remediation: Using A Genesis Cyclone

video synopsis on soil remediation by: Cherry A.

soil remediation equipment

Genesis Cyclone for Trenching, Resurfacing, Soil Remediation and Quarry Work.  The Genesis Cyclone is a very different attachment.  It’s a rock and concrete grinding tool.

It’s used in many applications from soil remediation to utility line placement, building demolition, quarrying, soil remediation, it’s been around the world, been used in many different applications.  “It literally spins at the end of the excavator’s stick tip, hydraulically, and is equipped with a series of teeth common in the rock industry that scales it’s way through rock and concrete.”

This tool has got carbide tip teeth that are replaceable.  They’re mounted in holders on  a drum that protects the internal gear box and hydraulic motor.  It’s a very strong, sturdy-built  machine that will stand-out to the breakout force of the excavators that it’s mounted to.

“Every one of these carbide processing teeth are replaceable and they’re patterned to minimize wear on the spinning drum.  This thing will actually tramp solid rock, things like sandstone, some forms of limestone or any material with a compressive strength of less than 10,000PSI.  The cyclone is particularly great with concrete.”

“It’s used a great deal in concrete veneer work, where a specific number of inches of concrete needs to be removed from the phasing of the concrete.  You can set the depth of it’s milling to match up with the specs of the job.  And, you can create a great surface on that concrete when the older concrete has been removed and you’re down into the parent concrete which is in much better shape.  The cyclone creates a very good surface for the new concrete to adhere to.”

Regardless of which application, whether it’s concrete or rock, the material that the tool removes, is almost without exception, perfect backfill.  It’s a 2inch, 3inch minus material and sometimes even under 1inch in size.  So, it can be used right on site for backfill.  Doesn’t need to be crushed , doesn’t need to be hauled away and fill doesn’t need to b purchased to be put back in the haul.

“Cyclone is currently available in four models.  Two with rotation, two without.  It requires at least a 70,000lb excavator to create the horsepower to keep the mills spinning.  And we make a larger model for the bigger machines.”

With these rotating models, there’s a bearing with locks at 90degrees, unlock the lock pins, manually turn it 90degrees and lock it down again.  Simple as that.   Genesis Cyclone is perfect for quarrying, resurfacing and soil remediation.

Soil Remediation: Contaminated Soil

Soil Remediation: Contaminated Soil

video synopsis on soil remediation by: Cherry A.

Site Remediation of Contaminated Soil.  Hi, James from Australian Enviroservices again.   We’re on site at Bankstown doing a little bit of excavation and soil remediation.

The preliminary investigation identified contaminated soil.  It was naturally and vertically delineated.  We’ve come on site with a 20 ton excavator, we’ve removed the soil , collected validation samples for the excavation and we’re now in the process of reinstating and compacting.

On this particular job, we’re reinstating with DGB20 and because of the depth of the excavation, we’re using a remote control head, foot vibrating roller.  The reason why we use this is so that we don’t have to send anyone down to the excavation because at the end of the day, we want to make sure that everyone goes home in the same shape that we’ve come to work.  So, thanks for watching our soil remediation video.
