Reusing Trim Moulding

The plan for reusing trim moulding

Reusing Trim Moulding

by: Gabriel A.

Your home has just undergone a makeover and you are wondering what to do with all the things that are replaced and removed from your home? This will be the worry of people who are concerned with the environment and that believes in the concept of recycling. Here is one of those very few tips that you can find here on the internet that discusses how you can reuse things removed from your remodeled home, specifically pertaining to trims. And I do mean that there are very few videos that feature recycling and reusing, that falls under the home improvement category.

Most videos will show you how to install, replace, and lure you to buying expensive accessories for your home but only few tells you how to recycle them, like what you can still do with sawdust or where can you use it instead of throwing it right inside the trash bag. This video is definitely one of those few videos that is recommended that you bookmark as future reference, in case you forgot. For a matter of fact, this definitely went into my archive.

This video presented by Bob Schmidt shows us where we could possibly use the trims instead of disposing them. Imagine how much money you can save for considering this option and applying it for your home. Imagine how much, or how little(I personally do not consider recycling a little of an act, I consider it a brave and bold act of taking care of our word for a change), you have just helped our degenerating environment to somehow sustain itself a little bit more. Hey a bundle of little acts to save the world can make a big difference in the future.

Every tiny decimal of an act still counts. Anyways, Bob Schmidt will show you ideas on how to reuse trims in this video. Applying that concept, you can also figure out what to do, or how to reuse, other things that can still be useful. Remember those early days when we are young and we used to stick anything together to make a toy? Well, this is how fun this is, except that it is better than just making your own unique toy, and your family and perhaps, our planet and the future generations will benefit from this. Such a useful information inside a video that this is.

Painting Trim and Moulding

Trim and moulding paint

Painting the trim and moulding

Painting Trim and Moulding

synopsis by: Talat Z.

You know when you are doing the interior painting; painting things in a right order can save your time and give you more perfect results when working on different types of trim and moulding.

For example if you are painting edges of the wall before you paint the wall itself. Up there where the wall is near to ceiling a painting pad is great tool to use. It’s a painting pad with some guide wheel at the top of it that moves along the ceiling. It is simpler to use, just place it on the wall and pull it along. Next is painting you woodwork like your baseboards and trim. Remember to paint this before you paint the wall. And you don’t have to worry if you get some of this trim paint along the wall itself. Now paint roller swirl off tiny spects of paint when you use them. So you want to protect this newly painted baseboard you just finished, before we start rolling we can do that with some painters tape or masking tape. Just put the tape on at very top of the baseboard so that it actually set as a shield. Now the paint spects will fall on the tape and not on the baseboard.

Once the trim or moulding paint is dry, we will cut the wall color intermitted. Again using the paint pad with the guide wheels we will do that. There is no faster way to paint those inside corners than with this corner painting pad. Finally roll up the walls. The results will be neat, clean and look like they are done by an expert. Different Styles of Exterior Moulding

Different Styles of Exterior Moulding

by: Jeremy K.

Exterior moulding styles

Different styles of exterior moulding

For hundreds (or probably thousands) of years, exterior mouldings have been one of the essentials in home construction, renovation, and improvement. Homeowners incorporate these materials into their homes not just to add beauty but also to serve as practical finishing touches that provide smooth and elegant bridges between surfaces.

Three Styles of Exterior Moulding

Manufacturers and distributors classify exterior mouldings differently, but in general, these materials fall under three classifications.

1. Classical exterior mouldings

This type of mouldings follows the Roman style of architecture. Symmetrical columns are introduced, and geometric patterns repetitively fill the house’s facade.

2. Formal exterior mouldings

These mouldings often have elaborate and repetitive designs, but they are used primarily to frame windows and doors.

3. Contemporary exterior mouldings

This type focuses mainly on the practical uses of mouldings. These mouldings are used not for aesthetics but to act as a bridge to cover ugly surface gaps and seams.

Considerations When Purchasing and Installing Exterior Mouldings

Unlike in the past, modern homeowners use exterior mouldings simply to cover gaps and seams. However, even though exterior mouldings no longer fulfill decorative duties, this does not mean that homeowners should take them for granted. When purchasing and installing exterior mouldings, here are some considerations.

1. Style and color

Exterior mouldings are still an essential part of the house so their style and color must complement the design of the house. For instance, a Victorian-inspired home must have elaborate exterior mouldings (and even spindles) to achieve the desired look. As for color, monotone schemes blend well with classical exterior mouldings.

2. Material

Traditionally, exterior mouldings are made only from wood and plaster. These materials, especially wood, bring out flawless and long-lasting elegance to the house. However, as times have changed, there are now several mouldings made from plastic, recycled wood, and composite materials. To make sure they get the most from mouldings, homeowners are encouraged to consider a material that best suits the design of the house, and the purpose of the mouldings.

Whether for the interior or exterior of the house, mouldings are used to give a house a distinct personality. They come in a variety of colors, styles, and materials. When used properly, they can be an invaluable, yet affordable, asset to the house.

Types of Decorative Exterior Moulding

Decorative exterior moulding

The types of decorative exterior moulding

Types of Decorative Exterior Moulding

by: Jeremy K.

Exterior mouldings are usually used to cap cornices and hide surface gaps and seams, but they are also widely used for ornamental purposes. They provide effortless decoration that enhances the appearance of the house.

Decorative exterior mouldings are made from different materials. While most of them are made from stone, others are made from cheaper materials such as polyurethane, foam, and PVC. These materials share many similar characteristics, but they also have several limitations and differences.

There are different types of decorative exterior mouldings. Among these types are the following.

1. Architraves

Architraves are one of the oldest mouldings used to spruce up the exteriors of the house. The ancient Romans had used elaborate architraves to decorate their temples and other important buildings. In modern houses, these decorative pieces are used to frame the areas surrounding windows or doors, acting as a frame that provides bold highlights.

2. Hood Moldings

Hood moldings, or hood molds, are installed because of practical purposes. They are an effective tool to provide protection against the heat of the sun and to keep the rain from getting inside the house. These decorative exterior mouldings are placed above doorways and windows.

3. Parapets

In the olden days, parapets are used to defend a raised structure from attacks. Today, they are used for decorative purposes, although they still serve the same purpose as in ancient times.

4. Keystones

Keystones are decorative stone pieces placed on the central of a house. They sometimes stand for something, as they represent a certain group, organization, or society. They are usually found in churches, castles, and government houses but homeowners can also use them to decorate the exterior of their house.

5. Trusses

There are two types of trusses: pitched (or sometimes called common trusses), and parallel chord (also known as flat trusses). Parallel chord trusses are used in floor construction, while pitched trusses provide a triangular decoration for the house’s exterior.

6. Quoins

These decorative exterior mouldings are placed at the corner of walls and structures mainly to provide support. However, in recent years, quoins are installed to make a house looks like it has a strong foundation.

Moulding: Coping Basics

Coping Basis moulding

How to design Coping Basis moulding

Moulding: Coping Basics

synopsis by: Talat Z.

This article will show you how cope various moldings using the dremel tool. What we going to talk about is coping basics. Now as a frame of reference its actually easier to explain coping by telling you first what it isn’t and where it is not used.

Where you don’t use it is the outside corner. An outside corner is always mitered. Two faces of the molding usually cut at a 45 and fit together end to end and that’s pretty basic. However on the inside corners, People often apply the same principle and they miter the inside corners. The two faces of the molding fit together end to end again, however that works nicely in the shop but in the reality of the house where the floor can be lumpy there could be imperfections. The corners of the molding could be very difficult to tight on a project. Especially when you nail, the nails force the molding to the wall obviously. That in so doing often open the joint at the corner of the molding either at the top or bottom or both. So its strictly get right in real life application. That’s where coping comes into play.

Now coping can only be done on an inside corner. The good news is; most corners of inside. The secret to coping is that why it is so good, is this that a coped joint removes on of the faces that a miter joint has leaving you with the sharp leading edge. That enables you to make both pieces of moldings fit together nicely. Another secret is that piece A actually lays over piece B. So when temperature fluctuations make the molding on the move around, you can cut this joint so that it stay very joint. And once you get the hack of it, its actually easier and faster to install. So these are some coping basics for more information visit http://www.monkeysee.com. Also, check out this great video on coping basics with regard to moulding.

Crown Moulding In Three Easy Steps

Crown moulding

Design Crown moulding in three easy steps

Crown Moulding in Three Easy Steps

synopsis by: Talat Z.

Step number one of the three steps in this article is to find the spring angle of your crown molding. If you are a contractor and you have done crown molding projects before, you might already be familiar with the spring angles. If not, you are about to learn one of the best secret in crown molding. And it is that crown molding comes in three different common spring angles and the spring angle is simply the degree that your molding sits off when installed to the wall. The three common spring angles are 38, 45 ad 52 degrees. So your crown molding will set at these three angles off the wall. Once you know the spring angle of your crown molding you simply use the matching jig and that does the adjustment for you.

Step number two is setting your saw. Your left hand miter is always set to the degree of your corner. Because most corners are not square. You will need to measure exact degree of your corner with the angle finder or protector. Once you determine the exact degree of your corner divide that number in half and that is your saw setting.

Step number three is to determine which cut you need to make and follow the pictures. The two most common corners are inside corners and outside corners. A left side and a right side as you are facing the corner. For example if you want to make an inside left cut, you find the picture on the instruction it says left, it shows you to place the taper or small size of the jig towards the saw fence and then place molding on top of the jig with the face down and the detail down, and then carefully make your cut.
