fence railing

Fence railing can be an important feature to showcase the house. Architectural fence railings installed in a planned way can really add to the visual beauty.

Usually 4×4 posts are attached to the deck frame to provide the support for the rail.  There are also some composite fence railings which require installing a wood post. The 4×4’s must be long enough to project the railing at least 36” above the frame. Generally it extends below the deck surface for attachment to the frame as a mean of support.

There is a part that run horizontally to the posts, they inter connect the posts the give it necessary strength.  In wood decks 2×4’s are often used for this purpose. The top rail must be set so the top of the guardrail is at least 36” above the floor.  Likewise the bottom rail is usually raised above the surface to allow a sweep space for snow and leaves but it may not extend beyond 4” from the floor. Sometimes a top cap is used to extend the view. Boards laid flat work well and provide a level surface to place drinks. The infill section of rails is usually constructed of the repeated use of pickets.

These kits are handy and they come in different shapes and sizes. Balusters or pickets are the rail components used to provide infill for deck guard rails. Many creative deck builders have crafted unique rails using conventional wood parts in different applications such as using horizontal and vertical members to create a grid or setting 2×2’s at angles to form a sunburst pattern.  Along the way professional deck builders started installing copper tubing into drilled out holes along the top and bottom rail.  This was an interesting look but required substantial labor.

Most wood guard rails use a top cap to finish the top of the fence rail.  This component is usually a 2×6 board laid flat and run across the narrow side of the 2×4 top rails.  The purpose of the top cap is both aesthetic and functional.  The flat surface provides a convenient ledge to set drinks on top of or to rest against.  A top cap also covers the baluster connections from the top side to prevent them from loosening. Post caps are decorative tops that can be attached to the top of rail posts to add an interesting appearance.  Some deck builders bevel the tops of the rail posts themselves to soften the sharp corners and offer a stylized finish.  Today one can choose from hundreds of pre manufactured post caps made from wood, metal, composite, glass, and ceramics.  Some are very detailed and interesting….great way to enhance your fence railing design.

Fence Railings For Your Home

Fence Railings For Your Home

video synopsis by: Vikram S.

Fence railing is the part and parcel of a deck. The total outlook is represented by the railing as it is one of the most focused parts of the deck. Fence railings are generally made from the material deck is made from. But recently a new trend of contrast rail has come to light. Traditional wood coexists with equally popular modern items like glass, cable, composite, metal etc.

In the recent years there has been a great improvisation in the fence railing industry. Generally deck railing is placed at the outward side of a house it illustrates the graphical presentation of the house so a complementary color scheme should be chosen for better view.  Metal and composite fence railings offer a low maintenance value but glass railings and cable rails are attractive because they preserve views.

Architectural ornamental iron fence railings are generally seen today in landmark restoration and renovation projects. Its use is because it creates a timeless effort on the overview of a landmark. It also provides visual clearance. Iron and other metallic materials provide stunning style and handcrafted artistry with a distinctive touch. Aluminum rail is extensively used in house and a resident as it is easy to maintain and the cost is low. Whether contemporary or traditional style fence railing is required, aluminum railing can be made well finished and customized.

The designs of wood fence railings have increased manifold though its use is decreasing. It is crafted and detailed along with its way of plan i.e. Roman, Goth, Frank, Celt etc. The traditional railing mostly consists of wood railing but glass has been a new alternate to it because of its transparency and strength.

Because fence railings are such an important design feature for any deck, spending some time researching the options and allowing some room in the budget for a rail that suits the taste would be best.

Amazing Composite Fence Railings

Amazing Composite Fence Railings:

video synopsis by: Vikram S.

Composite fence railing is a dimension of railing system. Composite railing is made from wood covered by metals or treated wood. Actually this has brought a new generation of wooden fence railings.

In the recent days composite fence railing has become one of the most popular modes of railing. They can be made by joining individual kits very easily. The materials are treated and seasoned with chemical and dried before manufacturing. The basic difference between normal wood and composite fence railing is that wood easily rots but composite does not. Since composite railing is ware proof so it can be painted easily. It can also be prepared by seasoning the old wooden one.

Wood fence railing has moisture trapped into it and when it rains the moisture can easily go inside of it causing it to swell and when sun comes out the moisture comes out of the wood and causes it to shrink. So weather has extreme impact on the wood rail. But composite is made from the specific collaboration of wood and plastic. It does not swell or shrink during rainy season and summer. These decks also maintain their color for years so they don’t stain out. Special attention should be paid while choosing the right material for the railing.

Installation process is quite easy as it does not require much proficiency in this sector. Posts are installed at a pre measured distance and the subsequent fence railings are placed in between them. Designs and additional parts can be pinned on it after the installation of railing to the deck. These systems use 4×4 pressure treated wood posts covered by a sleeve and mounted to either the inside or outside of the frame. Each railing section can be easily installed between posts using brackets provided in each kit. Stair railing kits are also available for ease of installation.

Composite fence railing brings an extravagant look to the house and increases the house value. A good and exquisite look can be well paid off if its illustration creates a temptation to the viewer.

International Building Code for Deck Railings and Steps

synopsis by: Talat Z.

From this article you will learn about the basic international codes for the handrails and steps. Essentially what the international building code does is it provides minimum standards for building or renovating specifically as a US residential is provided by  the international residential code.

Now what is covered in this is as a concise to the step it is this that maximum rise or maximum height from the top of one tread to the top of the next. And this maximum height is measured from a finished surface so whether it’s a solid wood or carpet the maximum can be seven and three quarter’s inches. And then also as you have a number of steps the maximum difference between the height of any two treads can be a difference of maximum of three eight of an inch. The other standard that is covered as it has to do with the steps is you have to have the clear dimension of thirty six inches in width. So if you have handrail that stick out or stand off the wall the minimum width you can have between the hand rails or clear opening is thirty six inches. Now there are also standards that tell you how far the edge of the hand rail has to be from wall. It also covers the maximum height. Typically this height is around anywhere from minimum height of thirty eight inches or twenty seven inches if you have two rails.

There is other standard that covered in the international building code related to hand rails of the stairs is the minimum height clearance that you have from any step to the ceiling above you. So if the step extends pass where the ceiling start coming up then you have to measure from that tread up. Now to establish what these minimums are you need to have the copy of international building code or international residential code or you can contact your local builders department.  It will be your city department if you are living in city limits and if your are outside that will be your county. So prior to building anything or renovating anything in your home as it pertains to stairs or handrails you have to make sure that you check these specific codes and specific measurements and requirements.

Deck Hand Railings

Deck hand railing

Design of Deck hand railing

Deck Hand Railings

synopsis by: Talat Z.

Deck rails are another important safety features which are being made from two by four materials. You will learn how to make these deck rails.

A top piece will be positioned horizontally while the bottom piece will set vertically. Each of the spindle will cut at a same angle so that  when they are nailed they won’t twist. After that the top rail is nailed and the whole unit is put right in place between the post. Our stairs and hand rails take just about as much time to build as some large deck.

But there is such an important part of any deck is making sure that stairs are nice and safe and hand rails are sturdy and that they comply with your local building codes. The building codes will tell you just how high the hand rails needs to be  and exactly how much space you can tolerate between the spindles. That is very important when you have small children or pets that will be using the deck.

Another and very important element when you are talking about children have a little kiddy blocks under, because they love to stand on the bottom hand rails and this will protect that from bowing away also what keeps it a little more rigid. Because wood has the tendency to warp a little bit so this will help to keep the hand rail itself nice and straight. There are lots of ways to accessories  hand rails that really can make difference on your over all deck. Like you can consider lighting or even rope lighting used under the hand rail itself that kind of give a nice glow around the perimeter of the deck.

Installing Stair Railings

How to install stair railing

Installing Stair Railings – Colonial Elegance

by: Ligaya M.

Stair railings are for looks and safety and whether its time to replace your current rail or you just want to change up  the look is something you can do at your own. This article will show you how to do it.

Its very simple to put in your own railing. Start by counting the numbers of steps your have in your stair case. Count each step as one foot and add an extra foot to figure out how long the railing will be needed. For example for twelve steps you should purchase at least thirteen feet of railing. And then the mill post at the bottom and then a mill posts at the top.  You will need one short baluster for the front of the step one line baluster for the rare of the step. Also measure the distance of any straight sections. If the old stair treads are worn now it’s the good time to change then.

Colonial elegance offer a wide collection of replacing stair treads. First drill pivot hole in the half noel. Use three inch construction screws to anchor to the wall studs. The bottom screw is covered with the plug. The top screw is hidden by the hand rail. The height of the hand rail depends upon the height of the balusters. To find the location of the bottom mill we take the width of the mill add half the width and measure it from the front of the step and the same amount from the side.

This is where the center of the post would be. Now drill a pivot hole. A double ended lag bolt is screwed into the bottom of the mill and then into the stair. Make sure the post is leveled. Then lay the hand rail section at the treads of the stairs and mark both ends at the correct angle to meet the post. Carefully cut the hand rail at this angle. Next drill three quarter inch  holes at each treads to conceive the balusters.  Then attach the hand rail to the bottom rail mill with the fastener. Drill a pivot hole in the mill post at a same angle as the hand rail. Install the bolt. Then in the hand rail drill the pivot hole  and larger hole for the nut. Apply glue and slide the rail to the end of the bolt and tighten the nut.

Next inset the baluster into the hole and mark the angle where you will cut the baluster at the top. Cut each end of baluster sixteen feet longer so it fix under the groove of the hand rail. Cut all the baluster to the proper length, check the level before installing then glue them and install them. Wait twenty four hours for the glue to dry.

Repairing A Damaged Vinyl Railing

a damaged vinyl railing repair

The repairing of a damaged vinyl railing

How to repair a damaged vinyl railing

by: Ligaya M.

Vinyl railings are made to be durable and low maintenance. Finished with non-porous materials, cleaning vinyl railings are easy since dirt, grime and even graffiti won’t stick to the surface. However, in as much as Achilles has a weak heal that is vulnerable to hurt, vinyl railings also have weakness. Its poles post are unfilled which makes it susceptible to damage more easily than wooden material.  The poles can be damaged when it is intentionally kicked or rammed by a stronger material or when it is accidentally hit by hard material or even just a ball.  This can cause a small crack or even hole to the poles.

Repairing holes of vinyl railings can be a challenging task.  In most instances, some homeowners prefer to just replace the damage post but there’s also a quick and easy way to repair it.  First step is to clean the area around the hole with a medium grit sandpaper then wipe said area with moisten towel to remove any dirt.  Fill the hole with an expanding insulation foam.  Spray the foam gradually to give time for the foam to expand and fill out all spaces in the hole.  Continue this till foam pile up and drips. Allow the foam to dry overnight.  The next day, sand the excess foam that dried out so that it is somewhat dipped than the post surface.  Put a plastic body filler compound to cover the foam filling. Let this dry for at least an hour. Using a puffy knife, scrape excess plastic filler to even out the post surface then smoothen it with a fine grit sandpaper.  Wipe away the dust and debris of dried plastic.

Finally, paint the covered hole with the matching color of the original vinyl railing.  If no color is available, pain the whole railing to ensure that they have uniformed color.

Building An Exterior Railing on Concrete

Building an Exterior Railing on Concrete

by: Ligaya M.

Handrails not only provide assistance and protection for people climbing stairs but also provide stability on concrete steps.  Ideally, building a hand railing on an exterior concrete should be done simultaneously with the concrete floor or steps.  Using metal on hand railing involves setting the vertical posts into the concrete steps to fasten them securely in proper place.  In other words, it should have been part of the original design of the concrete steps or floor.  However, in instances when the concrete steps are made first, adding a hand railing would reasonably be difficult.  Most home improvement stores sell metal handrail kits for those who wanted to build an hassle free handrails which includes easy to follow instructions to build and install the hand railing. Hereunder is a practical way to add a metal railing to the said concrete steps.

First of, one needs to prepare all materials needed including the metal handrail, metal flanges, markers, driller, 1/4inch concrete screws, level, Allen wrench, swivel sockets, cement and sand and paint.  It would be advisable to use top rail precut assembly so that one need not cut steel or metal.  It also comes in different designs that can complement your home.

The next step is to assemble the handrail with the vertical posts and top rail on the steps of the concrete.  Make proper measurements to ensure that the vertical posts especially on the ends will fit exactly to the both ends of the concrete floor.  Draw a circle of each vertical post around the lower portion on the concrete to mark areas to be drilled. Drill the marked points and place a metal flanges where each post of the railing will be attached.  Set vertical posts in each flange and hold a level on the side to ensure it is level horizontally and vertically.  Tighten the attachment using an allen range.  Slide swivel sockets on each vertical posts and tighten them from bottom to top.  Once everything is done, paint the metal railing with the color that matches your house exterior.

Exterior Glass Railings

Design of Exterior Glass Railings

Exterior Glass Railings

by: Ligaya M.

The use of exterior glass railings is becoming a modern trend in modern houses although this is more common in buildings and commercial establishments.  Unlike an interior glass railing, exterior glass railings are often made up of thicker glasses with that are more hard-edged. This is because of the greater exposure of the railings to temperature changes as well as natural calamities.  Thicker glasses are required for greater durability so that the railings will not break easily and has greater resistance to climatic changes.  Infact, latest technology has produced glass that are as durable as wood and steel ones and thus, never easily breaks.

The use of glass for exterior railings not only provides a more sophisticated look of the house.  However the biggest consideration of that homeowners deliberate in preferring an glass exterior railing is the location of the house.  Exterior glass railings provide the cleanest and most unobstructed view of the outside scenes of the house.  Exterior glass railings improve the interior of the house by integrating the outside and the inside of the house.  Because one can see the outside through the glass, it creates a sense of being one with the surroundings while providing protection against wind and foul smell in the exterior of the house.

The transparency of the glass railing can make the people inside the house susceptible to invasion of privacy.  To remedy this, some exterior glass railings are coated with tints that reflect the images of the people looking through it.  This gives people inside the house the advantage of seeing people and things outside while those outside the house cannot see the people inside of the house much like a one sided glass mirror.  Some exterior glass railings on the other hand are simply coated with dark tint which help dissipate the heat and sunlight passing through the glass. This helps provide better privacy as well as adds to the classiness of the railings.  However, to maintain the shine and transparency of the glass, the glass railings would definitely require regular cleaning to avoid blurredness.

The benefits of Composite deck railing

Benefits of composite deck railing

by: Ligaya M.

Composites deck railing is a great substitute to wood and metal railing.  It is durable and easy to install compared to wood and metal railing yet gives the same beauty enhancement to the backyard deck or the front porch and protection for the homeowner.  Among the major benefits of a composite deck railing includes its low maintenance, durability as it won’t rot or split, resistance to insects like termites and over all long term performance.  Unlike metal and wood, composite deck rails preserve their color and oppose stains, which make them perfect for outdoor use. They are non-porous which means that water cannot penetrate through them.  Thus, it resists water damage from rain or snow.   They also come in variety of natural-looking, attractive colors to match any home’s exterior.  Moreover, composite deck railings often comes complimentary accouterments that are equally easy to install such as ornamental deck rail balusters and ornamental post caps.  These deck railing accessories help to further enhance the attractiveness and splendor of a porch that endures a life time.
