Fence Design Ideas

A fence’s design is usually driven by two factors: appearance and function. Some homeowners put a huge weight on appearance; others think a functional fence is more important, while some others argue that a good fence is a balance of both function and appearance. It must look attractive while fulfilling the role it has to play properly.

Ideally, the third is the best way to work with a fence. It must be built for the part it needs to keep, but it should also be visually appealing to homeowners and onlookers alike. A good looking fence can help enhance the house landscape of the area it surrounds.

In choosing the right fencing material, consider the look and feel of your house. Select a fencing material that will complement that look. For example, if you wish to build a fence for a beach house or a country house made of wood or natural materials, a low-wooden fence would most likely blend with the relaxing atmosphere of the place and the surroundings. If you have a house constructed in a modern or contemporary style, modern looking materials like iron or aluminum would work better with it.

Another way to decide on what type of fence to build is the kind of picture you wish your space to evoke. Picket fences give a cottage-like feel to a place or a garden, while stone walls give the feeling of privacy and grandeur. If you are keener on privacy, however, tall vinyl fences with decorative latticework on top would help serve both purpose and appeal.

When selecting a fencing material, always consider the amount of time you can spare for maintenance. If you live a busy lifestyle, then better go for a low-upkeep fencing material like vinyl or composites. But of course, you can always hire somebody to clean your fence for you.

Building a fence nj that would help make your place more attractive can be more very satisfying than building a fence just for the sake of having a barrier. Utilizing both functional and decorative potential of fence-building materials is a wiser way of spending money.

Basic Considerations in Fence Building

Basic Considerations in Fence Building

Building a fence around your property gives you privacy and a feeling of security, while improving the appearance of your house and lawn area. Depending on the kind of house you have and the fencing material you use, you can make your place look more relaxing, elegant, or comfortable.

There are several fencing materials to choose from, natural and man-made. Wood is a natural product that is very popular in the fencing industry for its unique beauty and affordability. Next to wood, vinyl is the most preferred by those who need to stick to a budget. Those who have more to spend can choose among stone for extreme durability; metal for a modern-contemporary appeal; and composites for a wooden charm but with more strength and endurance and lesser maintenance.

For wooden fencing, solid wood, cedar, redwoods, and southern yellow pine are the best options. These varieties of wood last longer and offer more resistance to outdoor elements that can affect and damage the fence. To further prolong the life of a wooden fence, sealing and staining are advised. Although, untreated wood has a charm and beauty that is uniquely its own as it weathers with time.

Vinyl and composites are wood alternative materials. They resemble wood, but they are man-made with plastic. Composites look more like wood than vinyl, but it is also more expensive. Both wood alternative materials, however, are low-maintenance and durable.

If you are deciding whether to build your fence on your own or pay for professional labor, the best way to go about this is by doing both. Let the professionals handle the more difficult phases of fence-building, like setting the posts, and then you can take over and do the easier parts yourself using pre-fabricated units that are already cut to size, which you can purchase at home depots. This compromise of professional and personal labor can help you save money, time, and energy. You are assured of having a sturdy and well-made foundation for your fence, and you still get the satisfaction of building a fence in your own. It’s basically a win-win situation!

Wood Alternative Materials For Fencing

Wood Alternative Materials For Fencing

by: Sherry P.

There are many useful benefits homeowners can derive from building fences around their homes. First, a fenced home is a safer home. Fences, especially tall fences, can help give a family the feeling of security. Another valuable benefit is privacy.

A fence allows a household to go about their personal business without being seen or observed from the outside. And third, is beauty. Fences can help contribute to the improvement of the appearance of a home and the space that surrounds it.

Wood is the popular choice for fencing material due to its natural look and feel. It adds beauty to a place without looking overdone, and provides comfortable privacy. However, the disadvantage of using wood is in its durability. Wood rots and gets easily damaged by termites. Sometimes, even with its appeal, several homeowners opt out of using wood because it’s too much work on the upkeep department.

Vinyl and composites are wood alternatives that resemble wood in appearance but not in durability and maintenance demands. Vinyl is made from pure plastic, while composites are a mix of wood and plastic. These alternatives to wooden fencing are guaranteed not to rot and are resistant to insects and termites. They are more durable and easier to clean, but with the added benefits comes a price. They are more expensive than wood.

Between vinyl and composites, composites are more wood-looking; while vinyl appears fake a tad too obviously. Composites are manufactured in many design varieties modeled after certain kinds of wood. Vinyl, on the other hand, usually comes in white, and sometimes, beige. Of the two, composites are clearly more expensive. Both wood alternative fencing materials come in pre-formed panels in uniform sizes.

Wood alternative fencing materials allow you to enjoy the aesthetic benefits of wood without the upkeep hassle and massive deterioration rate. They are the fencing of choice for those who live a fast and busy lifestyle. They are also ideal for homeowners who put a high value on durability and endurance, but would not like to sacrifice beauty and appeal. With these wood alternative fencing materials, you get both!

Different Types of Fences

Different Types of Fences

by: Sherry P.

wood fence

There are many different types of fences. Each one is more suitable for different things. However, all fences are made to either keep people out of an area, or for protection. If you were to separate fences by the material that they are made from, there would be a lot of different types.

Chain-link, picket, post and rail, wrought iron, stone, hedge, roundpole and vinyl are the most popular types of fences that you can see on a regular basis. Chain-link fences are made from metal intertwined to make a repeating diamond-like pattern.

Picket fences are made from wood and are usually white. They are found mostly out the outer edges of home properties. Post and rail are also commonly found on the outer edges of home properties. They do not however, offer a large amount of privacy. Roundpole is very similar to post and rail fences, the only different are the shape of the post. Wrought iron fences can be in a number of different patterns. The offer a lot of protection and are made of the strong metal, iron. Stone fences are made from stones and are usually referred to as walls. Hedges are a fence-like structure made from plants and bushes. Vinyl fences are usually a large continuous piece of vinyl, and are used to keep people out of an area.

Another way to distinguish the different types of fences is by the service that they provide. Agricultural fences are used to keep animals in and out of a certain area. Depending on the animals, these can be made from many different materials and in many cases, have electrical current flowing through them. Boundary and privacy fences tend to go together. Usually found around a private property to block the world from seeing everything.

Other types of fences include temporary, pool, perimeter, pet and decorative fencing. Fences are most often used to protect ones belongings. Whether it is your property, your pool, your pets, your children, your gardens or just your yard, using fences to protect your belongings is very practical. Fences make people stop and think before continuing in that direction. They make sure that it is OK to go around the fence and if it is not, they stay out. Fences are a great form of protection and privacy.

Wood or Vinyl Fencing? The Best Choice For Your Home

Wood or Vinyl Fencing? The Best Choice For Your Home

by: Sherry P.

vinyl fence and fencing

Wood and vinyl are two of the most commonly used fencing materials nowadays because they have good aesthetic appeal, easy to work with, and come at more affordable prices than other fencing options like composites, metal, and stone.

These two fencing materials have both pros and cons. One material has an advantage over the other in one aspect, while in another aspect; the other is at an advantage. Here are the characteristics of vinyl and wood and what makes them the ideal or non-ideal fencing material for you:

Wooden fences make great DIY projects that can be shared with the whole family as a sort of bonding activity. Wood is easy to work with and no special skills are really needed when building wooden fences, as long as you know how to put and nail them together. Wood is also fairly easy to decorate. You can attach plant hangers and other decorative items on it. In terms of beauty, wood has a natural charm, and some woods become even more beautiful as they age and weather. The downside to wooden fences, however, is that they need to be properly maintained so they would last long. Wood fences may require regular staining and sealing to ward off insects like termites, and prevent it from rotting. Failure to take care of wooden fences well has a direct effect on its life and appearance.

Vinyl panels are slightly more expensive than wood, but they require little care and are almost effortless to clean. They don’t need painting, sealing, and staining, and are completely resistant to termites and rotting. It’s ideal for people who live a busy lifestyle, without time to take care of their fences. The disadvantage to vinyl fences however, is its possibility to crack and fade in color. Also, vinyl fences are almost always only available in white.

Either wood or vinyl can be a good fencing choice. When selecting which one to use, consider their pros and cons, and then decide which advantages would work better for you and the area you are going to fence. Which one is perfect for you, wood or vinyl? It’s up to you.

Low-Maintenance Vinyl Fences

Low-Maintenance Vinyl Fences

by: Sherry P.

pvc and vinyl fence

Vinyl fencing is one of the newer fencing materials available today. It is a wood alternative fence that needs very little maintenance which makes it ideal for people who have little time to clean and take care of their fencing.

Another advantage of vinyl fences over other wood is that it is not susceptible to rotting and insect damage as it is made from plastic. Vinyl is also budgeting friendly, a good choice for those who have to stick to a budget.

Vinyl fencing panels are pre-assembled and cut into uniform sizes. Vinyl panels are a little difficult to cut, it is advised to use them as they are, and if possible plain ground, without slopes. Matching gates for vinyl fences are also sold in home depots around the country.

There are three types of vinyl fencing, and each one is more suitable to a certain requirement or use.

1. Privacy vinyl fences provide full enclosure. They are typically used to surround pools, indicate limit to properties, or hide areas that are you do not wish the public to see. They come in lengths of 4 to 6 feet, and may have top designs or not.

2. Picket vinyl fences are shorter than privacy fences, measuring 4 feet or less, which means the surrounding view is not fully blocked. This fencing type has an attractive and decorative feel to it. It’s ideal for yards and lawns.

3. Shadowbox vinyl fences is the tallest of the three, measuring 6 feet in length or more. The panels are arranged in alternate manner, front and back, to allow a more airy appeal while providing privacy.

Vinyl fences are durable and easy to install. They don’t require much up keeping aside from the occasional mold cleanups, and are budget friendly. There are limited color options to vinyl fences, though. The common available colors are white, sand, and beige. Also, cheap vinyl has the tendency to look a lot like plastic. If you want a better looking fence, invest some more on quality. There are attractive vinyl panels that still cost less than other fencing materials.

Fence Railings For Your Deck

Fence Railings For Your Deck:

fence railing

Fence railing can be an important feature to showcase the house. Architectural fence railings installed in a planned way can really add to the visual beauty.

Usually 4×4 posts are attached to the deck frame to provide the support for the rail.  There are also some composite fence railings which require installing a wood post. The 4×4’s must be long enough to project the railing at least 36” above the frame. Generally it extends below the deck surface for attachment to the frame as a mean of support.

There is a part that run horizontally to the posts, they inter connect the posts the give it necessary strength.  In wood decks 2×4’s are often used for this purpose. The top rail must be set so the top of the guardrail is at least 36” above the floor.  Likewise the bottom rail is usually raised above the surface to allow a sweep space for snow and leaves but it may not extend beyond 4” from the floor. Sometimes a top cap is used to extend the view. Boards laid flat work well and provide a level surface to place drinks. The infill section of rails is usually constructed of the repeated use of pickets.

These kits are handy and they come in different shapes and sizes. Balusters or pickets are the rail components used to provide infill for deck guard rails. Many creative deck builders have crafted unique rails using conventional wood parts in different applications such as using horizontal and vertical members to create a grid or setting 2×2’s at angles to form a sunburst pattern.  Along the way professional deck builders started installing copper tubing into drilled out holes along the top and bottom rail.  This was an interesting look but required substantial labor.

Most wood guard rails use a top cap to finish the top of the fence rail.  This component is usually a 2×6 board laid flat and run across the narrow side of the 2×4 top rails.  The purpose of the top cap is both aesthetic and functional.  The flat surface provides a convenient ledge to set drinks on top of or to rest against.  A top cap also covers the baluster connections from the top side to prevent them from loosening. Post caps are decorative tops that can be attached to the top of rail posts to add an interesting appearance.  Some deck builders bevel the tops of the rail posts themselves to soften the sharp corners and offer a stylized finish.  Today one can choose from hundreds of pre manufactured post caps made from wood, metal, composite, glass, and ceramics.  Some are very detailed and interesting….great way to enhance your fence railing design.

Fence Products: The Many Different Types

article by: Stacy H.

Fences are used as boundaries and for security purpose. We have been using from many years. Fences are just like walls, walls are made with bricks, Walls block vision and passage, whereas fences only block the passage and let us have vision of that area.  Fences are many types.  Fences vary according to cost, means if you spend more money you get more quality like iron fences or aluminum fences. If you like spend less money you get wood fences, wood fences are also good and gives good look and attraction to your home. Few types of fences are here.

Wood fences

Chain link fences

Ornamental wrought iron fences

Vinyl fences

Aluminum fences

Wood fences mainly made of treated pine, cypress or Western red cedar. Wood fences are used for home purpose.  Chain link fences are used to protect for commercial or industrial property. Chin link fences stay many years. Chain link fences are costlier than wood fences.  Wrought iron fences are durable. These fences are used for residential and commercial purposes.

Vinyl fences made from PVC, these fences are long-lasting fences. There are many varieties in shapes of these fences.  Depending on our requirement we can select a variety among all. Aluminum fences are little bit similar to iron fences. Aluminum fences also stay many years. After fixing once we need not do anything for these fences they stay strong forever.

Nowadays we see one more variety in fences that is bamboo fence. Bamboos are also durable. Now all preferring this type for their home. In bamboo fence also we can get many models like slats, rolls, etc. These fences are grown naturally. These are available in attractive shapes and these fences are eco-friendly.

We have to talk about electric fences. Electric fences are dangerous. Chain link fences are used as electric fences. After fixing chain link fence some amount of current is passed through the wires of chain link fence. If anybody touches the fence they get shocked. Generally these kinds of fences are used to prevent animals or humans to enter into select area or building.  So electric fences give high security and dangerous too. Fence Railings For Your Home

Fence Railings For Your Home

video synopsis by: Vikram S.

Fence railing is the part and parcel of a deck. The total outlook is represented by the railing as it is one of the most focused parts of the deck. Fence railings are generally made from the material deck is made from. But recently a new trend of contrast rail has come to light. Traditional wood coexists with equally popular modern items like glass, cable, composite, metal etc.

In the recent years there has been a great improvisation in the fence railing industry. Generally deck railing is placed at the outward side of a house it illustrates the graphical presentation of the house so a complementary color scheme should be chosen for better view.  Metal and composite fence railings offer a low maintenance value but glass railings and cable rails are attractive because they preserve views.

Architectural ornamental iron fence railings are generally seen today in landmark restoration and renovation projects. Its use is because it creates a timeless effort on the overview of a landmark. It also provides visual clearance. Iron and other metallic materials provide stunning style and handcrafted artistry with a distinctive touch. Aluminum rail is extensively used in house and a resident as it is easy to maintain and the cost is low. Whether contemporary or traditional style fence railing is required, aluminum railing can be made well finished and customized.

The designs of wood fence railings have increased manifold though its use is decreasing. It is crafted and detailed along with its way of plan i.e. Roman, Goth, Frank, Celt etc. The traditional railing mostly consists of wood railing but glass has been a new alternate to it because of its transparency and strength.

Because fence railings are such an important design feature for any deck, spending some time researching the options and allowing some room in the budget for a rail that suits the taste would be best.

Wire Fence For Your Home Improvement

Wire Fence For Your Home Improvement

by: Vikram S.

Wire fences are made based on a simple principle that is on the support of tension. Tension is created between the wires when they are tightly stretched. These wires are stretched generally between two vertical posts. These strutted posts are given additional support from small metal or wooden posts that helps in keeping wires upright. Placing of the strutted posts usually depends upon the fencing style used. Earlier galvanized mild steel was used as the fencing material in case of wire fencing, but now galvanized steel of high tensile strength is also being used in different places.

As the wires becomes saggy with time, it increases the chances of entanglement of the wires or escape. If you describe anything as saggy, you intend to say that it has loosens its firmness or has become less firm with the passing-by time. To avoid loosening of the wires, they are stretched to such an extent  that the wire allows.Wire fences can be stretched by a hand operation, using a wire stretcher or with the help of a vehicle such as tractor.

Wooden posts are used as the support posts in the extension of these wire fences. Wire fences are generally stretched between two wooden posts. Wood can be easily obtained from trees, which is a natural resource. So, timber for these support posts made up of wood which can be easily obtained from nature. However, the availability of the wood may differ with the density of trees in different areas.

The sources of these wooden posts are trees like juniper and oak. Juniper and oak trees are naturally rot resistant. The cost of the wood can also affect your pocket. Wooden support posts are usually used for stretching of non-electric wires. Steel posts can be a good alternative to the wooden posts. The availability of steel is more than the wood and it is cost effective too. So, steel support posts provides you a good alternative to the wooden posts.
